Chapter 27

Wednesday, September 13, 1939

Irena awakened to the sweet chatter of children’s voices drifting through the open window of her bedroom. The sun had risen, and the warm light illuminated the beautiful gold bedspread covering her and Katia. The curtains fluttered in the cool morning breeze, and birds sang. If she didn’t know better, she’d think Poland was not at war with Germany, and the past two weeks had only been a dream.

Or rather, a nightmare.

A soft knock on the bedroom door was followed by Pani Lasko’s voice. “Irena, may I come in?"

“Yes.”

Pani Lasko entered with a breakfast tray. “I have good news.”

“Yes?” Irena sat up in bed. Had the Germans been pushed back?

“Wilhelm’s fever broke early this morning, and he has a big appetite.” The older woman’s bright smile was contagious.

Irena pressed her hand over her heart. Thank You, Lord! Wilhelm was on the mend. What wonderful news! She would not ask about the war. She wanted to forget there was a war in this peaceful place.

“I need to go see him.” Irena leaned over and tickled Katia, and the child opened her eyes and sat up. Irena swung her feet to the floor. Since her ankle was encased in a large elastic bandage, she couldn’t tell if the swelling had gone down. She stood up on her good foot and added a little weight to her other foot. It still hurt. She hopped over to the small table where Pani Lasko had left their breakfast.

The tray was laden with slices of fresh bread still warm from the oven, a large slab of butter, a small jar of jam, two bowls of steaming oats, and a porcelain pitcher of milk. Oh, the blessings of living on a large estate. If only Piotr and Teresa could come and stay here until the Germans went home.

Was it still possible to stop them? When England and France attacked Germany from the west?

Little-boy voices drifted through the window again. Laughter. Boisterous play. How long had it been since they’d been able to play a game of tag outside? Not counting the real-life game they’d played running from the Germans?

“It’s so peaceful here. Have you had any problems since the war started?”

Pani Lasko shook her head, but her smile didn’t hide the wariness in her eyes. What is she not telling me? No matter. Irena would enjoy the comfort of this moment. Of this place.

After they ate, Irena helped Katia change into a clean dress Pani Lasko had brought. She handed Irena a lightweight green cotton dress to wear. “I’ll take Katia with me so she can get a little sunshine. Wilhelm’s room is at the end of the hall on the right. Aleksander’s coming home at noon to check on both of you.” She glanced down at Irena’s foot. “Try to stay off your feet as much as possible, dear.”

Irena dressed and rolled her hair into a French twist. She brushed her teeth and washed her face. She felt like a million złoty.
